The list of Cambridge fellows I have wept in front of grows apace. This morning it was my supervisor, because although he told me that I was (at last!) on track with my dissertation, on reading my PhD proposal he had to inform me that a) I wouldn't find anyone to supervise me on it at Cambridge, which likes its period boundaries, and b) it's probably too broad to be feasable at all.

So now I need to figure out where I want to live and what I want to do for the next three years, and you know, my life. And while I have been thinking that Cambridge is perhaps not the best place for me (I don't even know why they accepted me, knowing the sorts of things I wanted to work on, unless it was out of sadism), I really really really don't want to move again, oh God. I can't even explain how traumatic the last time was. But on the other hand, the thought of forever being an 'Early Modernist' or anything of the sort is profoundly oppressive. It's not as though, after I get my PhD, I'd be able to just write about whatever I wanted.

I just want to read interesting books and write things about them. Why is this so hard?

Everyone in my MPhil group has been telling me to take a 'me day', at which I laugh hollowly. My plan for today has actually been to spend the next six hours in the library before going to a concert thing at Robinson, and I think I really will feel better for getting some work out of the way. But first I need some food, being too overwrought for a proper lunch.

Maybe I should take a year out. But then I'd have to find a job, and we all know how well that's likely to go. Oh God. Food, then library.

Punctuation [Nov. 14th, 2009|09:23 pm]

[jtchase]
I've been following this group for over a year trying to figure out what I should get as a tattoo. I was actually inspired by an earlier post where a girl got the apple from The Giver as a tattoo. I want to get a quote from that book on my back. The whole quote is: "Things could be different. I don't know how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents. And everybody would have memories." I'm planning on getting "There could be colors," but I don't know how to punctuate it. Should I have no punctuation but capitalize the T, end with a period, or add an ellipsis: "There could be colors..."? Also, if anyone has a recommendation for a font that will hold up for a long time, please let me know.

Two Burning Questions [Nov. 14th, 2009|11:38 am]

[shannahlane]
[Current Location |Orlando Area]

1) Artist recommendations in Orlando, Florida? Looking for someone amazing for a text piece on my ribcage- first tattoo so preferably someone that will be kind when I'm freaking out. :) Price is not a huge factor, I am willing to spend money on something that will be on my body forever. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

2) This font: I need it.

I can't find anything like it on the internet, so this is my last resort. Does anyone know what font this is, or something similar?
Also, does anyone have experience with an artist "creating" a font for them? I'm considering bringing this photo in and having my artist make something for me. However, that brings me back to questions #1 because I don't actually have an artist and when I find one, they will have to be freakin' fantastic and capable of this. Because I'm picky. Crazy picky. ;)

Sorry for my rambling and thanks in advance!

Hey y'all,

so I'm planning a T.S. Eliot tattoo from "The Wasteland," specifically the part in bold:

"You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;"
"They called me the hyacinth girl."
--Yet when we came back, late, from the hyacinth garden,
Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.

The thing is, I would also like to have the line accompanied by a sprig of hyacinth, and I would like to base the image on antiquated-looking naturalist sketches. Think along the lines of the original Audubon drawings, but for flowers. Does anyone know of a particular book or artist I could consult where I might find images of this nature? I'm not really having an easy time of it searching online.

I have a 2 MBMJ necklaces for sale. Both are in new condition. I received these for my birthday this past August, but I never got around to wearing them. There's slight tarnish from sitting around (you can't really tell unless you really look closely at it), but I'm sure you could wipe it clean with some jewelry cleaner.

MBMJ I love you necklace. It spins! (much like the horse shoe one below).
$13 shipped within the US.

MBMJ I love you horseshoe necklace. This also spins.
$13 shipped within the US.

I accept paypal, money orders, & concealed cash at your own risk. Items will be shipped 1-3 days after the money processes. I've sold here on MBMJ and American Apparel communities. I also have some feedback on ebay under livvvvv.

Yuletide! [Nov. 12th, 2009|04:04 pm]

It really is the height of folly for me to sign-up for Yuletide this year, considering the utterly mad programme of work on which I am embarked, but this challenge is really one of the most happy-making parts of my year and I refuse to give it up (or even to not sign up for massive book series I haven't reread in years, oh dear). Somehow I'll manage it.

Dear Yuletide writer, I hope you'll be inspired rather than terrified to get my requests! These fandoms are all very near and dear to my heart, so any story for them would make me really happy. My own preference is for really detailed requests, so those are the kind I tend to write - I hope they're helpful and not intimidating.

In general I'm a big fan of romance (slash or het, depending on the fandom - I tend to stick to OTPs, so that's reflected in my requests), especially those turning-point moments where emotion breaks through a character's reserve. I like friendship (reluctant or otherwise), snappy dialogue, characters being good at things, geeky background detail and allusions. My favourite plot could probably be summed up with "Together, they fight crime!", crime loosely interpreted.

For Yuletide my preference is very much for happy stories at least as far as the main characters/pairing are concerned (not necessarily all the way through, but in time for the conclusion), even if that involves bending the canon to the utmost - sometimes what you really need is a clever AU to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and I'm a firm believer that no character is ever dead for good.

Not a fan of: incest, non-con, OOC behaviour, misconjugated Elizabethan verbs and Americanisms where not appropriate. Graphic sex is fine unless otherwise stated, but I like it to be grounded in the relationships between the characters. (ETA: And intense-but-Platonic is totally fine, too, if you don't feel you can go there!)

More on my specific requests )

I apologize for the length of that, dear writer - I am really very excited and rest assured that you'll be brightening up my holiday immensely with whatever you come up with! I'm not sure exactly what my Christmas plans will be yet, but I promise I'll comment as soon as I can get to a computer.

Tim Burton. [Nov. 11th, 2009|11:30 pm]

[horrifically]

I'd really like to get a tattoo of "Mummy Boy" from Mummy Boy by Tim Burton. However, my biggest problem is that I would like to get it as close to the drawings as I can but I'm affraid of it coming out looking very wonky. Do you think that this drawing could be worked into a tattoo without losing his original design of it? This is the poem: http://homepage.eircom.net/~sebulbac/burton/mummyboy.html. Obviously the tattoo would be bigger then the drawings.

I hope this is okay, as this is lyrical rather than literary. I am planning on getting a text tattoo of just the word "unfold" in reference to a song. I am pretty positive that I want it to be in simple Times New Roman, but the only thing I'm unsure about is the placement. Hopefully you guys can give me some of your opinions to help me decide!

Long time lurker, first time poster.
Hello, all!

I'm planning on getting a quote from a Mountain Goats song entitled 'The Young Thousands.'
Yes, it is indeed lyrics, and for that I'm sorry. It's just that the advice here is always wonderful.
It'll be my first tattoo, and I have already settled on the placement- the top of my foot.
I know that it's a pretty intense place to get work done. What do you guys think?
Maybe share some of your experiences with text tattoos on the feet?

My problem is that I just can't seem to settle on the perfect font.
I've gone through dafonts.com, and have come up with a few ideas.
Help me pick? I'd appreciate it very much.
Also, I'd like to hear any of your advice or feedback.

Thanks! :)

More Opinions Needed [Nov. 10th, 2009|03:44 pm]

[music |Prettier Face- Hawksley Workman]

Hey guys, this is my first time posting so have mercy on me.
I was thinking about getting "For nothing this wide universe I call, Save thou, my rose, in it thou art my all" on my ribs in two lines, as originally written. I'm an actor and this sonnet is the first sonnet I've ever performed and will continue to try ( and fail) to perfect. I suppose I'm second guessing the placement of it and just want everyone's overall opinion of the quote.

Thanks!
